Abstract
This study aims to analyze whether father's involvement in childcare influence the medical use in the early childhood. Using the data from Panel Study on Korean Children(PSKC) which was based on the birth cohorts of 1,703 children born in 2008, the analysis is made with the 3-year balanced panel of 965 households from 2010 to 2012. The major dependent variables were whether the children used the medical service as well as the number of the usage. In terms of medical services, emergency visit and hospitalization were specified. Father's involvements were measured in two ways: the average time spent in a week and the total score of involvement assessed by the partner. In each panel logit and count models, random and fixed effects were selected after testing the statistical hypothesis.
The main results of the study are as follows. First father's involvements in childcare had rarely changed neither by the women's (re)entry to labor market nor the childcare support. Second, although men can influence health status of their children, it may not be a factor influencing their medical use. Third, gender, birth order, chronic diseases were statistically significant for emergency visit, while father's age and child support were statistically significant for hospitalization.
Lastly, father's age was the only factor to reduce the possibility and frequency of hospitalization of children.
This study was an explanatory study on the effects of father's involvement on the utilization of health care in the early childhood. It attempted to define the meaning of childcare by fathers and to measure the care in order to their contribution in the context of public health.
